This section's set aside for information on how people are coming together to make a difference......Just one of the brilliant fundraising ideas.
Dear Angus,
We had a lovely day here in Ireland, for our pool party yesterday, a bright blue sky with a bit of breeze and plenty of warmth in the sun. The children and I bought plenty of ice-cream, chocolate chip, vanilla and raspberry ripple to sustain all the swimmers and then set off to the Sarah's house and the heated pool... nothing like the conditions that you'll have to face in the channel! My son Olmo, was looking forward to jumping on the rope over hanging the pool and bombing into the water...oh no!
Olmo's sister Beatrice was in charge of music and soon we had all the latest sounds blaring around the pool and the guests started to arrive. We had guests of all ages from 1 year olds who literally walked into the pool and sank (into the arms of a big sister!) to 70 year olds who sipped tea while watching the swimmers and dispersing the ice-cream. One of us brought a body board into the pool and shook it as if it were waves and half tried to body board whilst the others imagined that they were you in the sea fighting the waves, it made a fun game and the boys were queueing up to play Angus!
While the swimmers played in the water others were reading all the information I'd placed on the donations table my favourite comment was, 'Oh my god that is such a smart idea, it's a play pump roundabout, that's cool.' You could always tell when a reader got to the bit about Angus' wrist being broken and deciding to continue the swim in a waterproof cast - I don't think people really realised what a heroic effort this channel swim is until they arrived and actually saw pictures of Angus in his cast and read the story of Lawrence and the roundabout well charity.
The local press arrived and took quite a few pictures of the party goers as they played outside at soccer or on the swing set or just lay on the lawn chilling out.
A good time was had by all, with people 'popping in' and then staying all afternoon and borrowing swimming costumes to jump into the pool.
All in all the donations came to €207.
Fiona Quinn and swimmers!
